Centre Bans tourism at Jain holy site in Jharkhand

The ministry Thursday stayed provisions of Clause 3 of the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) notification and asked the state(Jharkhand) to prohibit all tourism and ecotourism activities in the area. The Centre ushered the Jharkhand government to implement the decision immediately and abide by the decision.

“The grievances mention the faulty implementation of provisions of the notification of the Eco-Sensitive Zone of Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary by Jharkhand. It has been mentioned that such negligence by state authorities has hurt their sentiments,’’ the ministry said in a statement.

Also, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav met representatives of the Jain community, which is protesting the tourist tag given to Sammed Shikharji Parvat Kshetra, a Jain holy site in Jharkhand. The Jain community’s matter of concern is that making the area a tourist site(giving the tourist tag) would lead to the consumption of alcohol and non-vegetarian food, which is forbidden in the religion.
