Congress asserts Pawan Khera has been arrested by the Assam Police at the Delhi airport
The Congress said its senior leader and media in-charge Pawan Khera has been arrested by the Assam Police at the Delhi airport on Thursday. Pawan Khera was earlier deboarded from a Delhi-Raipur flight as he was headed to Chhattisgarh for the AICC plenary session, scheduled to begin tomorrow.
“He’s being taken into the bus. Randeep Surjewala is going with him. They are being taken by the Assam Police. Isn’t this a dictatorship? Is this the reality of your right to freedom of speech?” Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said. She also shared visuals of Pawan Khera being escorted into a bus.
She added, “You (Modi) made statements like ‘why don’t you use Nehru surname’, and you arrest our leaders.” Referring to Khera’s “Narendra Gautamdas Modi” remark, Shrinate said, “It was a slip of tongue and he corrected himself.”
In a statement after the incident, Khera said that he was told there is a luggage issue. “I was told there is a problem with your luggage, even though I only have one handbag. When I came down from the flight, I was told that I cannot go. Then it was said – (Deputy Commissioner of Police) DCP will meet you. I’ve been waiting for a long time. There is no trace of rules, laws and reasons,” Khera said.
The Congress leaders raised slogans against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the tarmac in protest. “Modi jab jab darta hai, police ko aage karta hai (Whenever Modi is scared, he puts the police in front),” the Congress leaders shouted.
